In what has become a firm favourite in the Lodge's social calendar, the members of the Lodge and their partners met for the Lodge of Instruction's Annual General Meeting and supper.

The evening started with the members attending a very brief Annual General Meeting in a room upstairs, whilst their partners relaxed in the bar with refreshments. Official business out of the way, everyone was then free to enjoy an evening of relaxed conversation, drinks and (most importantly) excellent fish and chips! Roll on next year!

At the end of March, members of the East Hertfordshire Lodge No 3748 were invited to travel to Prague, Czechia for the Centenary Meeting of Lóže Národ (Nation Lodge) No 1.

The Lodge, which is the oldest in the country, has survived persecution from the Nazis and supression during the Soviet regime, so to mark their 100th anniversary was all the more special.

The meeting took place (in Czech, of course) inside the incredible Chapel of Mirrors inside the Klementinum in central Prague. Whilst the Brethren enjoyed the formalities of the meeting, their partners were taken on a guided tour of the building and its surroundings. The Grand Lodge of the Czech Republic had also mounted an exhibition, covering the history of Freemasonry in the country and the many dramatic episodes which feature in its story.

The guests all retired to prepare themselves for the evening, where a sumptuous Festive Board of traditional Czech fare was provided in the stunning Municipal House. Unlimited beer and wine undoubtedly helped create an atmosphere of great celebration and cemented the evening in the memories of all who attended.

The members of the Lodge made some fantastic new friends and look forward to strengthening the brotherhood between the two Lodges in the future.

The East Hertfordshire Lodge invited friends and family to join them for an 'open' meeting

January saw us hosting a meeting with a difference; invited our friends and family to join us for an 'open' or 'white table' meeting and the chance to get a glimpse of what really happens behind closed doors.

Our guests enjoyed teas and coffees in the bar whilst the official work of the Lodge was conducted. We then threw open the doors and invited them to join us inside the Lodge Room where the officers and members of the Lodge, in full regalia, proceeded to deliver a series of short talks about various aspects of Freemasonry, including the roles of the officers, the meaning of the clothing we wear and, most importantly, why we do what we do.

At the end of the meeting, the first verse of the national anthem was sung, before the Worshipful Master and his officers left the Lodge Room in procession.

With the formalities taken care of, everyone enjoyed refreshments in the bar before sitting down to a sumptuous 'White Table' Festive Board, where the Worshipful Master warmly thanked all our guests for attending and invited them to join us again in the future.

In the run-up to Christmas, the East Hertfordshire Lodge was pleased to be able to make a series of charitable donations to local charities.

The first of these was a cheque for £500; presented at the end of November by our Worshipful Master, Stephen Bull and Charity Steward, Bob Cunneen, to the Herts Young Homeless in Hatfield. This was followed by further cheques, also for £500, to the Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City (presented by our Immediate Past Master, Norman Hollands) and the Salvation Army in Ware (again, by our Worshipful Master, Stephen Bull).

Charity forms one of the core principles of Freemasonry and the East Hertfordshire Lodge is proud to be able to support the amazing work that charities, like those mentioned above, do in our communities. We look forward to doing what we can to help in 2019!

The members of the East Hertfordshire Lodge No 3748 and their family and friends once again travelled to The Bull Hotel in Gerrard's Cross for this year's Ladies' Festival. However, this year was an event with a difference due to our Worshipful Master and Festival President, W Bro Stephen Bull simultaneously being the Master of his Mother Lodge, St Andrews Stockwell Lodge No 6453. As such, the two Lodges joined forces for what would be a bumper 2018 Ladies' Festival!

The evening started in grand style with a drinks reception (with complimentary glasses of Prosecco for the ladies) before all sat down for a sumptuous three-course meal and wine.

After everyone had their fill, the toasts were conducted in excellent order with the Festival President toasting the very good health of all the ladies and partners present. The President's Lady, Janice Cheadle, responded on behalf of the ladies and thanked everyone for attending. A raffle was then held, which managed to raise the impressive sum of £1,000! The proceeds from this will be split evenly between both Lodges, for donations to local charities.

Formalities over, nothing remained but to dance the night away before those with enough staying power retired to the hotel bar for one or two (or more) night caps. All in all, it was an excellent evening and all are looking forward to the next event in 2019!

On Saturday, 6 October the East Hertfordshire Lodge and East Hertfordshire Chapter once again joined forces to host the Annual Charity Quiz and Supper, to raise money for the Provincial 2019 Festival in support of the Royal Masonic School for Girls and Boys (now part of the Masonic Charitable Foundation).

Now in it's fifth year, the quiz was held at Mayflower Place in Hertingfordbury and saw over 80 guests come together for a sumptuous buffet followed by a devilish quiz; hosted by W Bro Tony Reffold of the East Hertfordshire Chapter.

The evening was a great success and raised the impressive sum of £612! This was aided by the joint winning teams who, very graciously, donated their prize money back to charity!

    Wally
was born and brought up in Potters Bar. He
left school at 15 and worked as a butcher for a while. When he was young, Wally was involved in a bad
motorbike accident, when a lorry pulled out in front of him; resulting
in him being in a coma for nineteen days. He
was a keen real ale drinker and loved a glass of red wine. He
was married to Val, but sadly lost her about 10 or 12 years ago to
cancer.

He served as a member of HM Armed Forces (he was
in the Life Guards and Paras), but was invalided out after
being severely injured in Belfast. After that, he
worked in security for Hawker Siddeley and Roche before retiring and working as
a part-time driver.

Wally was a great animal lover - of dogs and
especially Black Labradors - and used to keep a great collection of carp. Sadly, however, he had to give them up when he needed to move home, due to
immobility.

    Wally
was initiated into Freemasonry in Chipping Barnet Lodge No 5599, on 15
November 1990, where he remained a faithful member ever since.

    From
that time Wally joined, and retained continuous membership of,
several Lodges; joining the East Hertfordshire Lodge No 3748 on 13
November 2008. In addition to this and his Mother Lodge, he was aalso a member of
the Michael
Batham Jones Lodge No 9675, the Stuart Lodge No 8578 (with a short
break and then re-joined), the Hertfordshire Masters Lodge No 4090, Bengeo Lodge No 6801 and a London Lodge; the Doneraile Lodge No 3558.

    Wally
was awarded Provincial Honours with Acting Office, as Provincial Grand Standard Bearer,
three years

going through the chair, due to his work for
charity; organising golf days etc. He was also a committed 'bucket-waver' for the RNLI, Help for Heroes and MacMillan; standing for many
hours in the cold and supermarket doorways.

    He
was a member of two Hertfordshire Chapters; being Exalted into Ellenbrook
Chapter No 8155 in February 1993 and then joining Halsey Chapter No 1479 in
2010. He later joined a London Chapter, Facta Non Verba No 3409, in 2014.

    Wally
was a long-time member of the East Hertfordshire Lodge and many
members, and no doubt many of our visitors, will recall his
Walking Charge and the garrulous jokes at the Festive Board whenever
proposing the Toast to Visiting Brethren. He was also a faithful
supporter of Bengeo Lodge No 6801; he always attended their
meetings and every LOI; eventually joining the Lodge in 2014.

Wally was always warm and welcoming, with entertaining stories to the
younger and new Brethren and anyone else who would listen. I can’t
speak about his time at other Lodges and Chapters but, knowing
Wally, I’m sure that he would have been well liked, well respected
and his passing will be greatly regretted by all who knew him.

Friday 6th April saw us host this year's supper for the members of the Lodge of Instruction and their wives and partners.

The evening was a fantastic opportunity for the members to take a
night off from the ritual and relax with their partners and friends for
strictly non-Masonic conversation. A delicious meal of fish and chips was served, followed by a 'Mayflower Place Sundae' (which contained a little surprise in each), tea and coffee and petits fours.

After dinner, all retired to the bar and enjoyed a drink and further conversation in front of a roaring open fire. All agreed it was a lovely evening and a much-needed chance to unwind and enjoy each other's company - exactly what Masonry should be all about.

London on 4 January 1931 and his father died when he was only 11
years old.

With his family struggling financially
he was allowed to leave school aged 13 years and 11 months and went
to work as Joiner's Improver, where he stayed until 1948 before
joining the Merchant Navy. This was a happy time of his life that saw
him working on ships that travelled all around the world.

When National Service came around he
found himself in the Royal Marines, where he took to the physical and
disciplined style of life. This persuaded him, on his demob, to seek
a similar style of work; leading him to join the Middlesex Fire
Brigade in 1953.

In 1963, having seen the error of his
ways, he transferred to a good Brigade, the then Hertfordshire Fire
and Ambulance Brigade; swapping a flat above Wembley Fire Station for
a new four bedroom house in Stevenage, where he was initially
stationed. Fred served mainly at Stevenage and Hertford, where he
rose through the ranks to Station Officer until his retirement in
1986.

Fred was also a fitness fanatic and
represented the Brigade at football, squash and athletics. In fact,
he also represented the Brigade aged 70; completing the 100 metres in
11.4 seconds!

To be with Fred during his service
days was like being in a whirlwind – everything done at the double!
Some say he broke every rule in the book – I wouldn’t go that far
but I would say he

        bent

       every rule in the book!

On retirement from the Brigade in
1986, Fred started working at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage as the
Fire and Health and Safety Officer, which he continued until his
second retirement in 2003.

Fred joined Masonry (this Lodge) in
1988 and, although he never went into the Chair, he received
Provincial Rank in 2004 in recognition of his work as both Almoner
and Assistant Secretary for the Lodge.

Fred was a regular attendee at Lodge
of Instruction; bringing with him his humour and his friends
'Algernon', 'Marmaduke' and 'Calvin Greene'.

Fred married Pauline in 1988 and they
had a son; Anthony. Recently, they moved into a new home at Hertford
Heath. Shortly before his death, during one of my visits, he confided
in me that he was pleased with his lot and had had a marvellous life.
He said he had many loves in life; sport, his classic Rolls Royce,
his membership of the Veteran Vehicle Club, his Royal Marines Club,
Masonry and he added with a smile that he was active and had enjoyed
all of these. He went on to say he had made good friends, seen the
world, served his country and the community he lived in and had set
Pauline up in her dream home. “Mick,” he said, “I am happy to
go now.”

      And
so he did, on 21 January 2018, aged 87.

Fred lived life to the full – a real
live wire, energetic, a good friend to all, good company and a good
Mason. A man who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

      Worshipful
Brother Richard Woodley Hayden passed to the Grand Lodge Above on
Sunday 4 February, after a short illness. His passing
came as something of a shock to us all and his absence in the Lodge
today is sorely felt.

      Richard
joined the East Hertfordshire Lodge on 13 May 1976, at
the age of 42; becoming our 191st Initiate. Eight years
later he was installed in the Chair as our 70th Worshipful
Master; waiting a mere 32 years before deciding to have another go
and becoming our 102nd in 2016; on which occasion I had
the great honour of installing him as my successor.

      Richard
was appointed to Provincial Grand Lodge in 1991, with the acting rank
of Provincial Grand Steward. He went on to receive no less than four
further Provincial promotions; culminating in the rank of Past
Provincial Senior Grand Warden.

      Provincial
honours aside, Richard will best be remembered by our members for his
warmth, openness and commitment to both this Lodge and our fraternity
as a whole. As a regular attendee at Lodge meetings and the Lodge of
Instruction, he was extremely knowledgable of our rituals and
customs; being ever ready to share his knowledge and advice and to
step in, when called upon, to deliver substantial portions of ritual.
As recently as last November, he faultlessly delivered the
Traditional History; putting the rest of us to shame.

      Richard
was also a great supporter of our Lodge social activities and his
family's team at our annual charity quiz night became a force to be
reckoned with - there's was definitely the team to beat and we are
hopeful that they will return again this year to continue his legacy.

      Outside
of Masonry, it would be fair to say that Richard (or Dick, as we have
just discovered he was known to most) was an extremely active man;
being a passionate golfer, cyclist and shooter. In 1970 he became the
County Champion in the long-range rifle competition and was involved
in the running and founding of several shooting clubs.

      He
was also a devoted family man; having been married to his wife Sylvia
for over 62 years and having three children and several
grandchildren. As many of you will be aware, Richard sadly lost his
son Ross to cancer in 2015 and, although such a loss was undoubtedly
devastating, he remained optimistic and positive; a strength of
character which was a gift to this Lodge and which will be greatly
missed by us all.

At our regular meeting in January, the members of the East Hertfordshire Lodge and their guests were treated to a demonstration of a triple Ceremony of Initiation by the brethren of Salisbury Union Lodge No. 767.

This unusual way of conducting ceremonies has become business as usual for Salisbury Union Lodge who, as a member of the Universities Scheme and as the Lodge associated with the University of Hertfordshire, have a high number of young men seeking to join. This necessitates multiple ceremonies as a means of bringing prospective candidates in quickly and guiding them through their three degrees before they complete their studies and leave the Province.

For the rest of us, multiple ceremonies are very much something out of the ordinary to witness and it would be agreed by all present that the performance presented by the Brethren of Salisbury Union Lodge was a pleasure to watch; being superbly delivered by their acting Worshipful Master, W Bro Richard Lane and his team of Officers, under the watchful eye of the Salisbury Union Lodge Director of Ceremonies, W Bro Peter Lucas. Special mention must be given to Bro Ben Brown, who was only Initiated himself in October 2016 and is now serving as Junior Warden in the Lodge! Additional assistance, in the capacity of demonstration candidates, was provided by our very own W Bro Stephen Bull and Bros Ergul Ibrahim and Joseph Nesbitt-Larking.

The meeting was followed by a lively and sociable Festive Board - crowning a highly-unusual and enjoyable evening of Masonry!

On Saturday 7th October, the East Hertfordshire Lodge marked a significant milestone in its history by reconnecting with its sister order, the East Hertfordshire Chapter, to host its fourth Annual Charity Quiz and Supper; in aid of the 2019 Festival for the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys.

The East Hertfordshire Chapter, which is celebrating its centenary this year, and the East Hertfordshire Lodge severed all ties early in their history and have spent the best part of the last 100 years operating remotely from one another. This has now changed, thanks to the efforts of Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro James Harrison and the Secretary and Scribe E of the orders, W Bro Thomas Day and W Bro David Broomer, who sought to use both orders' shared commitments to charity (and love of a good quiz) as an opportunity to reconnect and raise some money for a good cause.

Their efforts proved to be a great success, with over 85 members from both orders and their family and friends coming together to test their brains and raise some cash. The evening, held at Mayflower Place in Hertingfordbury and superbly hosted by W Bro Tony Reffold and his wife Beanie, raised the princely sum of £476; all of which will be donated to the 2019 Festival on behalf of both orders.

Roll on next year's quiz!

Ritual, workings and Lodge of Instructions can all seem a bit daunting for younger (or, more accurately, newer) Freemasons so, as part of a new mentoring policy, the East Hertfordshire Lodge held its first ever 'Light Blue' LOI on 21st April.

The evening, at which more experienced 'dark blue' Masons were kindly asked to 'take the night off', was designed as an informal opportunity for Lodge Mentor W Bro Michael Dennis to provide the light blues with further explanation about some of the basic workings of the Lodge and the meaning behind some of the more unusual elements of ritual and Lodge etiquette. It also provided an opportunity for the light blues to ask any questions that they may have felt uncomfortable asking in a normal LOI or Lodge meeting.

W Bro Michael Dennis was ably assisted by the Worshipful Master W Bro Norman Hollands and Bro Director and Assistant Director of Ceremonies W Bros Matthew Dennis and Ali Osman; between whom we had a veritable treasure trove of Masonic knowledge!

The evening was a great success and plans are underway to make this a more regular event in the near future.

On Friday 7th April the East Hertfordshire Lodge of Instruction held its annual supper. This purely social event was an opportunity for the Brethren to take a night off from ritual and enjoy some fish and chips with their partners. It was a very delicious evening!

We're very excited to learn that our nominated charity has been selected to receive one of 30 donations of £300 from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Hertfordshire, in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the United Grand Lodge of England this year. Our chosen charity was the Hertfordshire Society for the Blind, who we recently shared our 100th birthday year with. We are extremely pleased that we can continue support such a worthy local charity.

      Worshipful
Brother Stanley James Hollands passed to the Grand Lodge Above on
Friday 8
July, following a long battle with cancer. As the 'Father of the
Lodge' he was known to us all and, indeed, many of our visitors today
would have been well-acquainted with him. He was a good friend and an
outstanding Freemason.

      Stan
was born in April 1945, in Scotland, but lived most of his life down
here in Hertfordshire. He and his wife Judith made the village of
Digswell their home and went on to build not one, but two of their
own houses; the latter of which would go on to be the family home for
themselves and their two sons Andrew and Matthew. In fact, the family
home became one of Stan's life-long hobbies and he continued to add
to, repair and improve it right up until the point where his illness
would no longer allow him to continue.

      One
of Stan's other life-long passions was the organisation of which we
are all proud members.

      He
was Initiated into the East Hertfordshire Lodge on 8
November 1973 and, over the subsequent years, would go on to become
the Lodge's 68th
Worshipful Master, in 1982, and then the 86th
in 2001. At various points he also held the offices of Assistant
Director of Ceremonies, Charity Steward, Director of Ceremonies and
Lodge Mentor.

      In
1989 Stan was promoted to Provincial Grand Lodge in the acting office
of Provincial Junior Grand Deacon; going on to receive subsequent
appointments as Past Provincial Superintendent of Works and Past
Provincial Senior Grand Deacon.

      Among
the most notable of Stan's Masonic achievements, however, was his
involvement in the management and preservation of this building as a
centre for Freemasonry within the Province. Without wishing to detain
you with an exhaustive list of all the contributions Stan made over
the years, both in terms of time, money and energy, suffice it to say
that there is a very real possibility that we would not be meeting
here today were it not for his tireless efforts. Even as he stepped
back from being actively involved in running the centre, he was
instrumental in introducing the current management team; something
for which I hope you will all take note when we are enjoying our
festive board later this evening.

      Stan
was also extremely active within our Lodge of Instruction and it's
probably in this capacity that I will have my fondest memories of
him. He was a renowned perfectionist with strong beliefs on how
things should be done, but also extremely generous with his time and
knowledge; always taking care to not only correct, but to explain
what the ritual meant and why it was being delivered in a particular
way. He also had a fantastic sense of humour and there were many an
LOI that descended in to silliness and laughter.

      Stanley
Hollands embodied the values of what it means to be a Freemason and
his departure from this Lodge is a sore loss for us all. He will be
greatly missed.

On May 19th 2015 the East Hertfordshire Lodge commemorated its first century by celebrating in style at its spiritual home of Mayflower Place in Hertingfordbury.

Records show that in early 1914, “Several prominent Freemasons residing or having interest in the Province of Hertfordshire, considered the time had come when it was desirable that a new Lodge should be formed in the Province which would be conducted strictly in accordance with the highest traditions of Freemasonry and kept exclusively for men of good position and who take a sincere interest in Freemasonry.”

A preliminary meeting was called for on the 19th March 1914 and it was resolved that a petition be presented to the Grand Master, praying for a Warrant of Constitution.

This petition, having been granted, the Lodge was consecrated by R W Bro the Rt Hon T F Halsey, Deputy Grand Master, Provincial Grand Master of Hertfordshire, assisted by W Bro Charles Edward Keyser, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, on Wednesday 19th May 1915 in the Temple of Frascati’s Restaurant, Oxford Street, London.

Thus the East Hertfordshire Lodge was formed and 100 years later to the day was presented with a Centenary Warrant by the Provincial Grand Master R W Bro Paul Gower in what proved to be a most impressive ceremony.

As well as the Provincial Grand Master’s usual team of Sword Bearers, Standard Bearers and Stewards, he was supported by three Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, W Bros David Ferris, James Harrison and Jay Patel, and attended by the Provincial Grand Wardens, W Bros Stuart Hutchinson and Peter Walters. He was further accompanied by the Provincial Grand Chaplain, W Bro Anthony Wright, the Provincial Grand Secretary W Bro Hugh Oram, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, W Bro Keith Dunnett and Provincial Grand Organist, W Bro Nicholas Murdoch; all of whom took an active part in the formal proceedings.

An interesting and poignant reminder of the Great War was made by the Provincial Grand Chaplain in his Oration; drawing on the fact that the East Hertfordshire Lodge was formed at a time when the world was in great turmoil.

The Warrant was received on behalf of the Lodge by its 101st Master, W Bro Thomas Day, who had not only been initiated into the Lodge in 2010 by his father, W Bro Philip Day, but also happened to have been the Lodge’s 100th Master; thereby enjoying the privilege of installing his son as Master in March this year.

The celebrations culminated in a superb Festive Board which will remain in the memory of those present for many years to come. In all, almost a hundred members and guests enjoyed the festivities; each being presented with an engraved whiskey tasting tumbler as a memento of the occasion. The evening was rounded off by '100 Years of Song', performed by the Provincial Singers and led by W Bro Ken Burgess.

The President of the Freemasons' Grand Charity, Grahame Elliott, has approved an emergency grant of £20,000 to the Red Cross following a large earthquake in Chile. The earthquake struck at 03:35 hours local time on 27 February 2010; measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale. It is reported to be the worst earthquake to hit the country in 25 years, and has been followed by aftershocks of up to 6.9 magnitude. 802 people are confirmed dead and over 2 million are believed to have been affected.

The earthquake hit 90 kilometres north-east of the city of Concepción in central Chile and has reportedly caused considerable damage to infrastructure in the Bíobío and Maule regions. Many roads and buildings have been damaged, particularly in coastal zones, while some areas continue to suffer from power outages, though Santiago remains largely unaffected.

Freemasons Donate £30,000 to Help Earthquake Victims

Following the devastating earthquake which took place in Haiti on Tuesday 12th January 2010, the President of the Freemasons' Grand Charity has approved two emergency grants totalling £30,000.

The 7.3-magnitude quake, Haiti's worst in two centuries, struck at 16:53 local time (21:53 GMT) on Tuesday. The epicentre was within 10 miles of the centre of the densely-populated capital, where around one million people live, and more than 50,000 people are feared dead.

The Red Cross have pre-positioned relief supplies for 3,000 families in Haiti. These emergency supplies consist of kitchen kits, shelter kits and tarpaulins, personal hygiene kits, blankets and containers for storing drinking water. Red Cross volunteers in Haiti are currently assisting the injured and supporting hospitals who do not have enough capacity to deal with this emergency. The most urgent needs at this time are search and rescue, field hospitals, emergency health, water purification, emergency shelter, logistics and telecommunications.

On the 20th January 2010, in response to requests from members of the Craft and as the extent of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti became clearer, the Council of the Freemasons' Grand Charity opened a dedicated Relief Chest. This centrally-administered service is for those who would like their donation for victims of the earthquake to be part of a co-ordinated Masonic response.

Any individual Freemason or Lodge wishing to make a donation via the Council's Relief Chest and in support of the longer-term recovery efforts can do so by sending a cheque payable to "The Freemasons' Grand Charity" to: Relief Chest Scheme, 60 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5AZ and noting that it is to be paid into the Haiti Earthquake 2010 Relief Chest No. E0125.

£650,000 Donation for Hospices Across England and Wales

Continuing an annual programme of support, the Freemasons’ Grand Charity is donating £500,000 to hospices across England and Wales - in total 225 services will receive a grant. In addition to this grant, £150,000 was awarded to Lifelites, to provide educational and recreation technology for children in hospices.

The money is an important contribution towards the millions of pounds needed each and every year to ensure these respected services can continue providing free physical, emotional, social and spiritual care to patients and their families.

Freemasons have been dedicated in their support for hospices across England and Wales for the past 25 years, and this year takes the total donations to the sector to more than £8 million; complementing the generosity Provincial and individual Masonic Lodges regularly show for their local services.

Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH) was selected by the Immediate Past Master W Bro Alan Verney as his chosen charity of the year. His choice was influenced by his brother Clive, whose wife Rita was cared for by the Ian Rennie nurses. For six years prior to her death in 2008, Rita had been a dedicated and popular volunteer in Iain Rennie's Tring shop.

Our Installation meeting this year was attended by nearly eighty brethren including the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, R W Bro Colin Harris. They came to witness our Senior Warden, Bro Matthew Dennis being Installed as Master of the Lodge by his father W Bro Michael Dennis.

Matthew was initiated in 2001 and has steadily worked through the various Offices, eventually culminating in the top job. Despite having had the opportunity of getting there a year earlier it was his wish to have served in all the Offices prior to becoming Master and to this end W Bro Alan Verney, already himself a past master, took the chair last year to enable this to happen; inviting Michael to temporarily occupy his chair in order to Install his son.

The emotionally-charged ceremony was conducted with both dignity and good humour, yet retained the absolute solemnity befitting the occasion. It was a credit to all those who took part.

Later on in the proceedings, another landmark in the history of the East Hertfordshire Lodge was noted by the presentation of a Certificate of Service by the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master to W Bro Brian Mills; celebrating 50 years in Freemasonry. It truly was an unforgettable evening.

Our Festival this year was a return to the Hotel Miramar, Bournemouth from Friday 28th February to Sunday 1st March and it was blessed with the best weekend weather we have had this year - sunshine all the way.

Initial problems with numbers posed some concern as to whether the event could take place this year due to the credit crunch. However, we eventually managed to sit a creditable 46 for the banquet and in conversation afterwards it seemed that the smaller numbers did not detract from a successful event but, on the contrary, enabled those present to circulate more freely and meet friends both old and new.

The President, W Bro Alan Verney was accompanied by his wife Shirley, members of their family and their 10 month old granddaughter, Jemima. They were supported by Officers and Brethren of the Lodge along with their families and friends which included four delightful young ladies under 12 years of age being introduced to the established standards of Ladies’ Festival etiquette. That process enabled the President to 'take orange juice' with them during dinner!

During the evening, various raffle and auction prizes were on offer, resulting in over £600 being raised for the Master's List. The chosen Charity this year was

quickly redirected the efforts of 500 staff already in the country from work on longer-term projects to the emergency relief response. Essential supplies, including food and clean water have already been distributed to over 100,000 people.

The grant of £20,000 from the Freemasons’ Grand Charity will be an important contribution to this ongoing work and is enough to provide plastic sheeting for temporary accommodation to 1,400 families, including around 33,000 children.

Freemasons Support Victims of China Earthquake

The President of the Grand Charity has approved a £20,000 grant to the Red Cross to support relief efforts following an earthquake on May 12th 2008, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, in south-western China. The Freemasons’ Grand Charity is the first organisation to support the British Red Cross’ response to the worst earthquake to strike China in more than 30 years.

The Red Cross Society of China’s local branches have been active in the 48 hours following the quake, providing emergency relief to the affected areas, including tents and blankets. At the time of writing, the official death toll stood at over 40,000, with over 250,000 people injured.

The grant of £20,000 from the Freemasons’ Grand Charity will be an important contribution to the continuing rescue and relief efforts and is enough to provide approximately 200 relief tents, which will provide shelter for many of those affected and act as a first aid point to treat casualties, and also 850 quilts.

The hospice supports families from across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire who are caring for a child or young person diagnosed with a life limiting condition. Such illnesses sadly prevent most of these young people from reaching adulthood.

The staff offer medical and social care, emotional support and friendship to the whole family, throughout the child's illness and after their death, for as long as it is needed. This valuable care is provided free of charge to families in need, regardless of race, religion or culture.

A total of 64 guests, comprising Lodge members and friends with their Ladies, once more descended on the Miramar Hotel in Bournemouth on the weekend of February 22nd - 24th, where W Bro Michael Dennis presided over what proved to be a wonderful ladies weekend.

The Miramar commands a prime location situated on the sea front at East Cliff. The food and accommodation provided are of a very high standard and as usual W Bro Alan Verney did a marvellous job in both organising the weekend and in his role as Master of Ceremonies.

The weekend kicked-off on the Friday evening with a race night which was an outstanding success, as not only being entertaining but also productive in serving to boost the money raised for charity. The Banquet on Saturday evening was most enjoyable, with speeches relevant, entertaining and enlightening. The dinner was duly rounded-off with dancing to a live band.

The Certificate of Grand Patronage was presented in open Lodge by Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Paul Gower to our new Worshipful Master W Bro Michael Dennis on the afternoon of his Installation into the chair on 8th March 2007.

The East Hertfordshire Lodge Ladies Festival was hosted this year at the Hotel Miramar in Bournemouth during the weekend of 9th -11th February 2007.

The event, organized by Alan Verney on behalf of this year's President, W Bro Ron Barlow and his Lady, Sue, was very well-attended. So much so that the hotel was filled to capacity; requiring a further hotel to be utilised to accommodate the overflow of guests. A great weekend ensued; culminating in the Gala dinner on the Saturday night.

All agreed that the evening was a huge success and that they were very well looked-after by the Miramar management and staff. Excellent food, good music and first class company ensured a memorable night; even leading to the subject of next year's event being discussed in various quarters before the night was even over!

A vast selection of raffle prizes were generously donated which enabled the total money raised for charitable giving to amount to a very respectable £1,100.

In April 2006, two members of the East Hertfordshire Lodge were fortunate enough to be selected to take part in the consecration of a new English-speaking Lodge in Bulgaria, after having previously visited Sofia in July of the previous year to demonstrate the full Emulation ritual; comprising the three degrees and ceremony of Installation.
