Charity

Generous giving has always been at the centre of Freemasonry, supporting the community as a whole. Charity lies at it's very heart and is part of the commitment made by every Freemason on becoming a member.

From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues to this day. In addition, large sums of money are given to Masons also support non-Masonic charities both nationally and locally.

Masonic charity is exercised at every level, individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own communities and every Province also gives large sums of money to regional causes. Nationally, our efforts are channelled through four main charity organisations, they are:

The Grand Charity
The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys
The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution
The Masonic Samaritan Fund

As well as the above, there are the various Masonic hospitals around the world.   The members only give what they can afford and care is taken to ensure that a member's own family do not suffer as a result of his generosity to the community.

In England and Wales alone Freemasons raise more than £20 million pounds every year. The funds are distributed quietly, without fanfares from the media.  Anyone who wishes to know the full details of which charities benefit can apply to Grand Lodge at Freemasons Hall in Great Queen Street, London WC2.  Details also appear in various periodicals, most notably in the monthly Freemasonry Today Magazine.
